Explore the island of Krk
Krk is the largest island in Croatia and the most northern in the Mediterranean. The administrative center is the city of Krk. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and can thus be reached easily and at any time. Rijeka airport is also located on the island, just after the bridge and near the city of Omišalj. The island of Krk is the most populated island in the Adriatic. Due to its pleasant climate and its good accessibility, it has already been inhabited for prehistoric times.
Among the 1185 Croatian islands there is only one golden, the Insula Aurea - the island of Krk. Located in the heart of the Kvarner Bay it is one of the most attractive tourist destinations. Because of its mild Mediterranean climate, its favorable geographical position and its variety of natural and cultural beauties it has already back in ancient times been called the "golden island". Its cultural heritage has given it another name - the cradle of Croatian culture - and since the beginning of the 20th century it is also called the "sixth continent".
The 45th Latitude passes through the island. The longest part of the island is about 38 and the widest about 20 kilometers. The coast has a total length of 190km. The nearby mainland is just a hundred meters away and its neighboring islands are the islands of Cres, Goli and Rab; a few smaller islands also belong to Krk (the largest is Plavnik, which has 17km of coast, and the smallest is Školjić with just 400m of coast). The island of Krk has an unusually varied relief, which rises from the northwest to the southeast - from picturesque gentle coves and lagoons, along fertile fields and dense forests with sub-mediterranean vegetation, to the parts of bare limestone and real mountain landscape. On the island of Krk there are three streams and two lakes.
On the highest mountain top, Obzovi (570m), visitors may forget that they are actually on an island. Here also, several specific phenomena can be found - such as the flora of Krk, which includes about 1400 species of mainland plants, what is almost the half of the total Croatian flora. The unique plant "Barbašova Lazarkinja" is a world rarity and it only grows in the Baška lagoon.
Even in the fauna, there are some rarities. Bird species, for example, vary from eagles / vultures to the oriental steppe bird "Vrški Tić". To this entire and complex contrast of natural characteristics we should add the Mediterranean climate - hot summers and mild winters, the cold continental wind that blows from the north-east "Bura" and the humid "Jugo", as well as the pleasant summer wind "Maestral", that blows from the west.
Literally, all roads lead to the island of Krk: from the mainland - over the bridge of Krk; from the sea - by boats in the ports or small fishing ports and by ferries in the Valbiska harbour; from the air - by plane to the Rijeka airport near Omišalj.
The island of Krk is only 30 kilometers away from the city of Rijeka - which is the traffic, business, commercial, university and cultural center of the Kvarner. No matter which way you choose, with your arrival on the island of Krk, you will certainly be convinced that the golden island reflects the union of variety - the connection between present and past, modernity and the antiquity, legend and reality.
Since ancient times it is believed that the island of Krk is fatefully connected with the number seven: it has been inhabited by the Croatians in the 7th century, it defended itself seven times successfully against pirates, the seventh prince, Prince Frankopan, was the last prince of Krk. Today the island of Krk has seven centers.
